Clinical Research

A clinical trial is a research study meant to help improve current treatments or obtain information on new treatments for patients with cancer. The Lacks Cancer Center regularly conducts research and clinical trials through the Office of Research and Innovation at Saint Mary's in conjunction with the Grand Rapids Clinical Oncology Program (GRCOP) and with funding from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Community Clinical Oncology Program (CCOP). We partner with 300 physicians to access almost 150 cancer research studies for patients living in 38 counties.

In November 2011, Saint Mary's opened a brand new, 6,000 square-foot Clinical Trial Unit at the downtown campus. As West Michigan's first Clinical Trials Unit, the eight-bed unit offers space for Phase I through Phase II/III studies.
